John Brennan’s criticism of President Trump may have gone a few tweets too far. That is the opinion of some of his fellow intelligence community peers. What raises their concern is the bad image that Brennan is painting about their community. If Mr. Brennan is so far off the wall that he sounds like he is suffering from the Trump Derangement Syndrome, then that shows he cannot control himself. The intelligence community wants to be viewed as an impartial defender of America from external threats. Mr. Brennan has tarnished their image. Intelligence officials on Sunday expressed concern that ex-CIA Director John Brennan has waded too far into politics with his vehement criticism of President Trump, days after the administration drew critical fire for revoking Brennan’s security clearance.
“I think John is subtle like a freight train, and he’s going to say what’s on his mind,” James Clapper, a former director of national intelligence, said on CNN’s “State of the Union.”
Clapper is among the eight former intelligence officials whose clearances are under review by the White House. Each individual has been vocally critical of the president since he took office, prompting speculation that the move is meant to be retaliatory.
“I think, though, that the common denominator among all of us that have been speaking up, though, is genuine concern about the jeopardy or threats to our institutions and values, and although we may express that in different ways,” Clapper said. “And I think that’s what this really is about.”
“But John and his rhetoric have become, I think, an issue in and of itself,” Clapper added.
